Norfolk evokes a strong sense of beauty, stemming from its quaint countryside, sedating Broads and picturesque market towns. It’s a wonderfully laid-back way of life, showcased perfectly by the following towns, all found within Norfolk’s green and pleasant lands.
Aylsham
Exceptionally useful for those into their antiques and archaic culture, Aylsham boasts of a number of auctions and antique stores that display a charming, jovial atmosphere.
The Bure Valley Railway is a family friendly steam train adventure, sure to complete any day out in this small market town.
The shops in the area are incredibly personal as many of them support their own producers, keeping themselves to themselves. The town holds a Georgian-esque market on Mondays and Fridays where an assortment of goods can be purchased. Keys Auctions is another popular stop, appealing to many.
Diss
Diss has the comfort and pleasure of being very close to Norfolk’s prime city, Norwich. It’s known for its green lands and slow way of life. The market is split into four separate sections (Cobbs, Norfolk House, Hales, Wills), each of them containing a plethora of quaint courtyards where visitors can enjoy a relaxing cup of coffee, watching the day pass by.
Like Aylsham, it’s a town that is home to a fair few auction spots where tourists are able to secure a bunch of bargains as well as peruse the vast selection of goods, foods and other items.
Wymondham
Another town close to Norwich, Wymondham features something of an historic appeal with its archaic Abbey building and excellent walking routes along the river.
The Heritage Museum is a good spot to stop off at during a visit to the town and Friday is the best day for those wishing to hit the stalls as the marketplace comes to life. The Farmer’s Market is effective as it’s the number one source of fresh meats and produce in the town, selling the very best of local foods. It’s a thriving community town, strong on its heritage and friendly to outsiders.
Fakenham
This one’s for the budding sportsmen of the family. Fakenham, which sits pleasantly on the River Wensum, includes a popular racecourse within its limits to nicely complement the selection of pubs, stores and stalls. The weekly market is held every Thursday, all over town, perfect for everyone to actively search for a bargain. Elsewhere, the Reserves and Gardens are wondrously good views of Norfolk’s greener side, great for those who want to interact with the wildlife in the area. With this in mind, there are plenty of charming hotels and B& Bs around the town, offering great, affordable accommodation.
Downham Market
Lying on the edge of the Fens, a vast marshland in the west of Norfolk, Downham is a medieval town with a strong Saxon history. It was once used primarily for agricultural means but has since expanded into a thriving market town, selling everything and anything.
Fridays and Saturdays are the popular market days where stalls are set up, selling local produce, meats, jams and many other great items. There are a great collection of independent stores now in the area, a clear reminder of the town’s expansive nature, catering to everyone who passes through its absorbing market streets.
